Costa Rica 19th February to the 8th March 1990

John, Doreen and David Cooper
David, Doreen and myself, joined a small group of observers with the trip being organised by Steve Whitehouse. Although we had visited North America on several occasions previously, this was our first trip to Central America and therefore many new birds were seen by ourselves. In total, we saw 435 different species of birds which included 36 species of Hummingbirds, 4 species of Motmots and 7 species of Trogons plus the Resplendent Quetzal.
In 1990, before digital cameras, I was using a fairly basic Nikon camera with a standard 300mm lens and colour transparency films with generally slow film speeds and in the rain forests, photography became almost impossible and the general results were very poor. Since our visit, Costa Rica has become far more popular on the birder's itinerary and many more sites have become known but even so Costa Rica has a large bird list and even in a two week trip an impressive bird-list can be obtained.
It is now over 25 years since our trip to Costa Rica and I haven't looked at my slides or re-visited our trip report for several years and therefore it has brought back many happy memories, it is certainly a bird-rich country and well worth another visit.
